It was supposed to be a feature where you could use the db-9 console port to pass data (like over frame relay). I don't know if the later Pipeline 50s have the "what's that toggle switch for" in the back, but it's what that switch was supposed to be for (if you slided the switch towards the BRI port, it was supposed to enable the Serial WAN). However, I think Ascend never really implemented this feature much, though I have heard claims of some people saying they actually got this to work after a lot of manipulation with cable pinouts and CSUs (since it's only an RS-232 port and not something common like V.35). I wouldn't waste my time on it and I'm sure no one at Lucent support will know what to do with it. What is Serial WAN?
