From cbridges at moseslake-wa.com Sat Dec 1 23:42:56 2001 From: cbridges at moseslake-wa.com (Clint Bridges) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:01:25 2005 Subject: [Ascend] (ASCEND) Max-HP 4048 Routing Configuration Message-ID: <003a01c17af4$319bfd80$67a8a8c0@bentonrea.com> Hi List, Can anyone out there give me some pointers on configuring a MAX 4048 for dial-in Internet access? Here's what I have and what I have done so far: I have working DNS/Web servers on a 216.7.46.128/26 network. The servers are running FreeBSD version 4.2. I have my Max 4048 at 216.7.46.141/26. I have a 24-Channel T-1 connected to the Max (it has 56k modems in it) and can sucessfully dial in and connect to the Max. I am using Ascend Radius version 98XXXX, the latest off the old Ascend FTP site. I created users in a user file like this: mickeym Password = "abcdefg" User-Service = Framed-User, Framed-Protocol = PPP, Framed-Routing = None, Ascend-Idle-Limit = 720 I have a DEFAULT user profile at the end of the user file. I have added the name of the MAX to the client file with its shared secret. The radius server and the Max are communicatiing on ports 1812 and 1813. DNS works, the radius server authenticates and logs me in and dynamically assigns me an IP address out of a pool of addresses handled by the Max. I have two machine connected to the MAX. One as a dial-in station (pretending to be an Internet client) and one connected to the MAX's serial port directly using Hyperterm. Talking thru the MAX's serial port (local terminal server) I can ping the Max's ethernet port and any other hosts units on the network, and I can ping the dialed-in W95 machine. I can also ping out onto the Internet using either an Ip address or a domain name like www.yahoo.com. My problem is that from the dialed-in W95/98 Internet machine I cannot route or ping to anything beyond the ethernet interface of the MAX. It appears that I am mssing some essential piece of the setup or a route or something. I have re-built everything a dozen different ways this weeks trying to figure it out and I am stumped. I have tried four different flavors of Radius and they all so the same thing. I can log in but I cannot go anywhere. Can anyone tell me what I am missing? Laughter in the background... :-) I know, it is probably something so obvious that I will groan when I hear it. But I am at the end. I have read and re-read through the forums and lists, and have learned a huge amount about Unix, compiling programs and re-installing things. None of it has hurt me but I really would like the silly thing to work. Is there a trick or two with the MAX's and routing and Radius or have I missed the obvious? On the Max, there are static routes (most important, the default route) and dynamic routes (if a connection profile contains a static IP address the Max will generate a route to this subnet on dial-in). So what did you configure as your default route? Ethernet-Static Rtes-Default: Dest=0.0.0.0, Gateway=216.7.46.129 ? < Understand the next passage as for a configuration on the Max itself. Translate to RADIUS use accordingly. I would first try to get things straight with a local profile and then move on to a RADIUS entry). Then, make sure that your client gets this default route. Usually this is done by default but can be overridden with a "Client gateway" (Connection profile-IP options-Client gateway). If there is anything else than "0.0.0.0" this might cause trouble. OK, now the Max knows where to send packets to unknown destinations (e.g. the Internet). When a client connects, an IP from the pool (which?) is assigned and the Max becomes aware of a new route to this client. Check this in Terminal Server mode with "ipr sh". Then the client sends a packet to the Max. As it has received a Gateway address from the Max (does it have? check on a Windows machine with "winipcfg"/"ipconfig /all") it sends it to its modem and the packet reaches the Max. You know that this part works. Imagine the Max forwards this packet to the Internet and receives an answer. Does the Max know that the client on the (pool) IP address can be reached on a WAN port? Yes (see above). But does your router know? So next thing you check that on your router there is a route for the IP pool pointing to the Max. Otherwise, the router wouldn't know where to send the packet and would go and search this subnet on the Internet. Assuming your pool is 216.7.47.0/24 yielding remote host IPs .1 to .254. Then you would need a route for 216.7.47.0/24 (MASK 255.255.255.0) to 216.7.46.141 (your Max). Hope this helps. You should see the number of tries the system had on each Flash. Everything above 150 is BAD!! If you have such behavior you must exchange the Flash. Unlucky Lucent doesn't support this Hardware anymore so you can't send it in. But before drop the Unit in your wastebag you may try to exchange the Flashes. The Flashes are two 28C040 in PLCC that directly surfacemounted on the PCB. I can't tell you which is which so exchange them both. (The bootloader is in the Eprom so the system must boot even without the Flashes) This requires skills with (un)soldering PCBs. I installed an APX 8000 running 9.0.4 TAOS and use a RADIUS program called Radiator running on Unix. Some users are in the 'user' file and some authenticate via the default user using the UNIX password file. The Radiator authenticates all users for about 2 hours and then all of a sudden, it fails. I get an error in the APX log that states there was a "RADIUS client timeout (code=1) for user xxxxx host xxxxxx" This error repeats for every user trying to authenticate until the RADIUS server is reset. After the reset, authentication is successful for another ~2 hours and then the timeouts begin again. There is no interruption of IP connectivity between the APX and the server. The RADIUS log file and syslog report errors as well. Prior to installing the APX, this exact RADIUS server authenticated users dialing in on PM3's without fail for years. Something is interrupting the Client/Server communication between the APX and the Radiator server. Also, these are 2 replicated servers that this occurs on. Both behave the exact same way. If anyone has seen this before or has any idea what the cause/solution could be, I'd be thrilled if you would share it. To not flood the Ascends with all external LSAs I'm using a NSSA. The problem is that the Cisco involved receives all the Type-7 LSAs from the NSSA as expected, but doesn't translate them to Type-5s. According to cisco>show ip ospf database nssa-external 192.168.234.0 OSPF Router with ID (aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa) (Process ID 15372) Type-7 AS External Link States (Area 1) LS age: 566 Options: (No TOS-capability, Type 7/5 translation, No DC) LS Type: AS External Link Link State ID: 192.168.234.0 (External Network Number ) Advertising Router: bbb.bbb.bbb.bbb LS Seq Number: 8000002A Checksum: 0x60B4 Length: 36 Network Mask: /24 Metric Type: 2 (Larger than any link state path) TOS: 0 Metric: 10 Forward Address: 0.0.0.0 External Route Tag: 0 the Type-7 LSA is received and has the P(ropagate)-Bit set. The reason for the LSA not to be translated is (I found that out after reading the NSSA RFC) that the Ascend box originates the LSA with Forward Address: 0.0.0.0 while RFC 1587 *requires* that When an NSSA internal AS boundary router originates a type-7 LSA that it wants to be translated into a type-5 LSA by the NSSA area border router (and subsequently flooded into the backbone), it must set the P-bit in the LS header's option field and add a valid forwarding ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ address in the type-7 LSA. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ which isn't happening. So the Cisco is correct in refusing the translation, while the Ascend is issuing the LSA the wrong way. Now this is a Max2k running TAOS 7.0.26. I tested to upgrade it to 7.2.4 and surprise - the forward address is in the LSAs then and the Cisco will translate them. Well you say, where is the problem? The problem is that 7.0.26 is the latest available TAOS that runs on a Max4k. There is no later version available, so the bug was never fixed for that platform. So what to do *now*? I had one that would stop passing ethernet traffic after about a day of uptime and I've got a few customer sites that have old 10 meg hubs that just plain don't work with the ethernet port on the Max6000. The only thing we've found that really helped was putting in a 10/100 switch between the router and the customers hub. We bought 5 port D-Link (DSS-5+) switches and haven't had problems like that since. ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ From mansoormax at yahoo.com Tue Dec 11 09:34:19 2001 From: mansoormax at yahoo.com (Khan Jee) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:01:27 2005 Subject: [Ascend] (ASCEND) Slow connection problem Message-ID: <20011211153419.53538.qmail@web20406.mail.yahoo.com> Dear All, I m facing problem with MaxTNT. The attribute takes affect on the device using the profile, in this case the TNT. In the case of Ascend DSL gear, these settings can be set on either or both ends, and they needn't even agree--lowest setting in either direction (presumably) wins. So, if you use this attribute on the TNT it will take effect (assuming it works, which I don't know). And, if the DSL Pipe makes it's own settings it will use them. If the Pipe tries to exceed the CIR set at the TNT the TNT should throttle it back--wouldn't be much of a CIR otherwise, would it? Bear in mind, from the docs: Dependencies: The system activates configurable receive data-rate limits only for connections that use CAP-RADSL, SDSL, and unchannelized DS3 cards. If you specify a value for a connection that does not use these cards, the system ignores the settings. -- Peter Lalor ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ From denny at reiters.org Fri Dec 14 14:48:30 2001 From: denny at reiters.org (Dennis Reiter) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:01:28 2005 Subject: [Ascend] Re: (ASCEND) TNT speed rate limiting In-Reply-To: ; from plalor@infoasis.com on Fri, Dec 14, 2001 at 11:55:16AM -0800 References: <200112140645.WAA07857@max.bungi.com> Message-ID: <20011214144830.F69609@reiters.org> Quoting Peter Lalor (plalor@infoasis.com): > > Dependencies: The system activates configurable receive > data-rate limits > only for connections that use CAP-RADSL, SDSL, and unchannelized DS3 > cards. Through the miracles of marketing, we're being made to offer an ADSL-like SDSL, ie, shaping a 1.1meg SDSL to be 1.1/128, 1.1/256, etc. Except for the 1.1/1.1 package. The filter I have set up blocks 137-139 udp ports incoming and outgoing. Running tcpdump shows arp problems. The switch based PCs can't find the max via arp: arp who-has max4000 tell host To say the least I'm very confused. Any thoughts would be greatly apreciated. Once DUN is re-installed they work like a champ, but until that is done, all the machine will do is fail the authentication sequence without even giving RADIUS a username, much less a password. Is Dialup Networking that rickedy in Windows 9x, and being installed in some corrupted form? The funny thing is that the same machines can dial right into a Portmaster without re-installing DUN. It is truly mystifying to me. I have a dial up client that needs static IP' so I set them up a block of 8 under Connections, but I cannot make it work like it should in theory. I have pools assigned to the Max and this client gets a Pool IP, even though their connection profile is what they authenticated on and that is what shows them online. I am using RadiusNT for my client base to authenticate on and have this client's account turned on; but I do not think this has any effect on this situation since the MAX see's the user online with an asterisk next to the username in the Connections profile. I am wondering what is not set right to force the IP block. I would rather do the Static IP's through the MAX instead of RadiusNT. Any ideas/help greatly appreciated. I have just purchased a used Max and am wondering if there are some problems with it. It is a MXHP-4T1-4. It came with 2 MX-SL-12MOD-S56 cards in it. My understanding is that it should have all 4 Wan ports active and 24 modems which would use the Wan 1 port. A little more information on the unit: This unit is just to be used for dial up. At boot up it identifies itself as a Multiband Max HP Software version is 5.OAp33 Load tik.m40 10-000 - Not Avail 20-000 - Net/T1 I am wondering a couple of things: First, are the first 2 Wan ports not available? That's what it looks like to me since 10-000 shows Not Avail. Can this be activated with the right software load? My other Max is running 7.0.4 load file ftbik.m40 and seems to be running well. Is this the best software version to use for dial up? Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction.
