In the process of troubleshooting some other network problems we
discovered our max4000 was sending out a large number of RIP broadcasts.

Since they seemed to be related to a secondary IP bound to the box I
removed the secondary IP and all seemed well.

We noticed that the ping times to the max were 1-4 seconds. I found a
note on google which suggested blocking udp ports 137/138/139 (netbios)
and that did seem to improve the ping times.

What happened then is that any machine plugged into the switch could no
longer see the max. If the max and a PC are plugged into a hub
everything works just fine.

The filter I have set up blocks 137-139 udp ports incoming and outgoing.
Running tcpdump shows arp problems. The switch based PCs can't find the
max via arp:

	arp who-has max4000 tell host

To say the least I'm very confused.

Any thoughts would be greatly apreciated.
