I have the same problem with my Maxes in Wytheville and Galax (also off the Wytheville switch, a DMS100). I've not tried the loopback thing... I usually just disable the CSUs for a few minutes, giving the switch time to reset the loop. When I had the same equipment on Verizon's switches in Pulaski (DMS100) and Radford (5ESS), I did not have this issue.
