I've got an Ascend MAX 6000 (one of 6), running software version 8.0.2. It previously had finger turned on (so our support department could get connection info for troubleshooting) and working fine. Last Wednesday, however, we used it to replace a very aging old MAX 6000 which used to be the head of our dial-up pool. The only configuration info that was changed was the Ascend's name, ethernet IP/subnetmask, default route, and dial-up pool assignment. Since the cutover, finger has stopped working and the port registers as closed. I've tried disabling/re-enabling finger to no avail. There were no active IP filters blocking TCP/UDP 53, but just in case I put in a couple of filters to explicitly allow the traffic to the MAX, and that didn't work. All the documentation I've read and the mailing list traffic I've found suggests that finger should really just work once you turn it on. Does anyone have any advice? The only thing I haven't tried is rebooting the MAX after making sure that Finger->Yes is saved in the active config. I'm loathe to do that as this is the first MAX in our dial-up pool and to do so would disconnect 47 customers pretty much any time of day. - -- "Even lands we once called home lie undiscovered and unknown. Hi, One of our MAX6000's running 9.0.3 suddenly one day decided that finger wasn't going to work anymore. One of our servers polls the box using finger every 5 minutes for the purposes of graphing users online and other statistics. I don't recall whether it was prompted by a configuration change, or whether it happened by itself. At first the finger port was still open, but trying to access it produced no output, and timed out. Later on it changed to the finger port being closed and rejecting a connection completely. No amount of enabling or disabling finger would get it working again. Finally the box was rebooted for another reason, and ever since then finger has been working fine....the interesting thing is that the uptime when finger first stopped was less than two weeks. My guess is there is a bug in the finger daemon that persists as late as 9.0.3. I think you'll just have to bite the bullet and schedule a reboot for early in the morning when you have the minimum number of customers online.... However, looking at this, I see a connect progress of 33, a disconnect cause of 185, and a connection speed of 0. This tells me that it was either a call from a regular phone or the modems weren't able to complete a handshake. If it was an actual modem, and this is happening every time the customer calls, there are a few things to try (in order of how we do it): - Disable V90 on the customer's modem - Have the customer update his modem firmware - Have the customer get the telco to fix his lines - Replace the modem HTH, -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks 540.994.4254 - 866.477.5638 http://www.psknet.com > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-ascend-users@max.bungi.com > [mailto:owner-ascend-users@max.bungi.com] On Behalf Of Anton Krall > Sent: Tuesday, August 06, 2002 5:08 PM > To: ascend-users@max.bungi.com > Subject: (ASCEND) Lucent TNT info line > > > Guys, can somebody please describe to me what all the info on > this line > from the TNT logs mean? > > Aug 6 16:00:54 200.52.95.119 1/6: [1/6/1/0] LAN session info: Conn=(? > 0/0 33/185) Auth=(11 0/0 0/0) Sess=(0 0/0 0/0) [MBID 2; > 5552417600->5220] [Answer] > > Thx for any help you can provide... > > Saludos > > Anton Krall > Director de Tecnolog?a > Inter.net M?xico / Panam? > > Tel; 5241-7609 Directo > Tel: 5241-7600 Conmutador > Celular: 0445-105-5160 > ICQ: 4979450 > email: akrall@team.inter.net > web: http://www.mx.inter.net > > Outside Mexico: > Office: +52(555)241-7609 > PBX: +52(555)241-7600 > Mobile: +52(555)105-5160 > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). > Version: 6.0.381 / Virus Database: 214 - Release Date: 8/2/2002 > > > ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ > To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to > ascend-users-request@bungi.com > Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ > > ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ From ANoriega at prima.com.ar Wed Aug 7 07:43:38 2002 From: ANoriega at prima.com.ar (Noriega, Alejandro) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:02:21 2005 Subject: [Ascend] (ASCEND) Lucent TNT info line Message-ID: LOG set call-info = end-of-call set syslog-format = max El formato con el cual estamos logueando es max como se ve especificado en la configuracion. Updated versions of the software, called TAOS, can be found at: ftp://ftp.ascend.com/pub/Software-Releases/Pipeline/ Get the files "Upgrade-Filenames.txt" and "Upgrade-Instructions.txt" from that directory, as they will be helpful. The Pipe85 uses the same software as the Pipe75. The latest versions are 7.3.4 or 8.0-101.2. The 7.3.4 release is a bit older, but is more thoroughly tested. The 8.0 release adds support for multiple NAT maps and some minor bugfixes. Both have been quite stable for us. Files relative to the above URL, with their primary differences: .../Release-7.3.X/7.3.4/b2a.p75 (IPX AppleTalk) .../Release-7.3.X/7.3.4/b2ix.p75 (X.25, IPsec) .../Release-8.0-101.2/b2.p75 (IPX) .../Release-8.0-101.2/b2a.p75 (IPX and AppleTalk) All support TCP/IP and the usual Internet-related features. My company uses 7.3.4/b2ix on all our customer routers and have had no problems with it. The 8.0 seems to work fine as well. | Also, I don't have the password to the Pipeline | device. Any suggestions on how I can retrieve it? If you have the Full Access password, you can bypass telnet by connecting on the console with a straight-through serial cable (like you would use with an external modem). Connect with setting 9600 8-N-1. You might try this anyway. People selling them used often wipe the configs first. If this is the case, the default Full Access password is "Ascend". If you don't have the Full Access password, your only choice is to NINDY the router (wipe the config and upload a new TAOS). Lucent has a document describing the procedure on their support site. I can't provide a URL, as they use cookies to prevent deep linking, so you can find it like this: 1) Go to https://support.lucent.com/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/AppLogic+dns.ProdIndex?LINK=Prodcontent 2) Scroll down until you find the Pipeline 85 link and follow it 3) Go to Techincal Notes 4) Search for the note titled "How to NINDY the Pipeline 50/75/85 Unit" (Watch the URL above, it's long and may wrap on your display.) -James ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ From petercleary at sympatico.ca Thu Aug 15 07:05:34 2002 From: petercleary at sympatico.ca (Peter Cleary) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:02:23 2005 Subject: [Ascend] RE: (ASCEND) Which version of s/w to Download In-Reply-To: <20020815033326.GA4897@valjean.si.ocslink.com> Message-ID: Hate to say it but that link requires a password... Try this: 1) Go to http://www.lucent.com/support/documentation.html 2) Click on the first link, "General Access Documentation" 3) Find and click on the product you want. The Pipelines are about halfway down the page. 4) Go to "Technical Notes" 5) Look for the NINDY document. If you forgot the password, you have only a couple of choices: 1) if you had SNMP enabled and you know the community strings, you can download the config using SNMP and just read the password from the downloaded file. 2) otherwise, you are pretty much SOL. Your only other choice is Nindy. I have never run nindy on a cvmax or on a terminator, so I can't really help you with the procedure. You probably will need to spend some time going thru Lucent's web site. :-( Good luck. -Joe >From: "Patrick Faget" >To: >Subject: (ASCEND) Password recovery for CVMAX100 (ASCEND UNIT) >Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 22:42:54 -0300 > > Hello, > > We have a CVMAX100 unit from Ascend (usually called as DSL >Terminator by Lucent) and unfortunately we forgot the password that gives >us full privileges. How this is done, depends on the model of the shelf controller: 1) if it has a tiny rotary switch accessible from the far left on the back panel, then set it to 0, power cycle the TNT, connect a terminal to the console port at 9600,8,n,1 and you are ready to go. 2) if it doesn't have the switch, then, connect a terminal to the console port at 9600,8,n,1, power cycle the TNT and within 10 seconds of the first prompt you see type "Ascend" (it is case sensitive). That should get you into Nindy. I'm trying to figure out what service model we're going use. Currently, we're going to be using DSLPipe CPEs for both SDSL and ADSL (the ADSL uses CAP, not DMT, and I have no control over that). As a user of DSL myself, I've been partial to bridging with static IP adresses. I've deployed this setup at another ISP using a Cisco and IRB (integrated routing and bridging), over Verizon's older frame-relay based service. As you know, of course, the TNT DSL supports bridging, PPP, frame-relay, etc, as do the DSLPipes. We'd prefer to not be married to the DSLPipes, however, so we would have the option of using other CPEs. The TNT manuals I have are older (copyright 1998) and make no mention of bridging (nor do they even refer to the OS as TAOS). What I want to know is: 1. Is bridging w/static IP addresses a workable model? I'd prefer to use neither PPP nor other layer 2 protocols at all (yes, I know a layer 2 protocol is necessary; I'm assuming with bridging I'm just bridging Ethernet--I don't want the clients to have to set up any special software other than TCP/IP configuration in their client OSes). 2. Will it be easy with this model to assign additional IP addresses, should the client want one? 3. Can I prevent users from just taking an unassigned IP address and using it with this model? I know that with the frame and IRB setup I'm using I associate the DLCI with the IP addresses, but this isn't configured the same way. 4. Should I be able to use most other RADSL-CAP CPEs and which ones do people have experience with and recommend? 5. Where can I get these cables with 50-pin amphenol connector to 4x DB-37 connectors? 6. The guy providing the upstream bandwidth is claiming that he can't give us IP addys to assign to every client, due to "new ARIN rules". I've asked him for references, but not gotten any. I think he's probably mistaken or full of it; does anyone know anything about this? I'd prefer to not have to do NAT or masquerading because it breaks some client applications (not to mention complicating my dynamic routing), but I have a Linux router if necessary. I've tried checking the list FAQ, lucentdocs.com and many google searches, but have come up with nothing that seems to help. Here are the details:- When I run the ISDN link at 64k, all is well. However, when I force the link to 128k, TCP connections either drop or become bouncy (as if packets are being dropped) - for example, ftp connects but then eventually dies with errors about not being able to establish the control connection, telnet sessions become very bouncy and eventually hang. If it helps, I had to manually force the link to 128k, as I can't get it to add the bandwidth on demand. I've tested the same line/ISP with an ISDN card in the back of the PC with no NAT and all is well at 128k. Can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong or give me any pointers to documentation I can look at? Cheers, Nick. Auth settings will use the current primary active external authenticator that you have specified in 'external-auth', auth-type. You could do proxy radius to separate dialin and network users. Dialin users would use a delimiting character and be proxied to another realm for authentication based on the realm they specify (eg. 'user@realm1'). Telnet users can authenticate using the local RADIUS server only, if you want, by not specifying a realm as part of their username when logging in. (eg 'user') There may be other ways but this is the first to come to mind. David Pascarella CCNP MCSE LCTE A+ Network Support Engineer SOLUServe TAC 1571 Robert J. I think stacking is enabled by default, but you can check by going to: Ethernet -> Mod Config -> Stack Options Just make sure each MAX uses the same stack name and UDP port. I make a ping to a user ip address and i see the time is very higth (35 a 40 segs). 3. It is very difficult to surf the net whith this connection. The FDL events are 'seen' by the MAX and occur on the trunk itself. You can then take this information and go to your telco with it. Also rule out your hardware, if possible, by swapping ports and different RAS boxes to see if the CRC's follow the trunk or a particular port/chassis. All of this is assuming that you have the correct config for your trunks and have ruled that out as well. A Facilities Data Link (FDL) is a 4-Kbps digital link between a sender and the telephone company's monitors. The FDL uses Extended Superframe (ESF) framing, a framing format that consists of 24 consecutive frames, separated by framing bits. The telephone company uses an FDL to check on the quality and performance of T1 lines. It provides information at regular intervals to your carrier's maintenance devices. The MAX unit continues to accumulate ESF performance statistics in the FDL Stats windows, even if you do not choose an FDL protocol. Your carrier can tell you which FDL protocol to specify. The FDL Stats windows are the fourth and fifth options listed in the VT100 interface's status window Net/T1 window: 10-000 Net/T1 10-300 Line Errors ^ 10-400 FDL1 Stats >10-500 FDL2 Stats 10-600 Net Options The following display shows the contents of the FDL2 Stats window: 10-500 FDL2 Stats >Error Events... I am currently in charge of a small office network and a specific database program that we have purchased and installed is not working correctly. The authors need PC anywhere access through our router to help diagnose and correct the issues with the database. In order to do this they have asked for me to configure the Pipeline to: Allow their public IP: 66.152.236.146 across any firewall that may be set up in the router and also forward IP request from them (66.152.236.146) to the static IP address of my router for ports 5631 and 5632 to 192.168.1.100. Although I has able to fumble my way through the initial configuration of this router I am clueless on how to accomplish this task correctly.
