When you say they can only ping addresses "local" to the router, do you
mean addresses on the subnet allocated to the ethernet that the 4048 is on ?

In that case its very likely just a routing problem - specifically, you
probably don't have a route or routes on your main upstream router (or your
"default" router for the subnet) for the ip address pool you're allocating
on the new MAX box.

Without knowing more about your network topology it's hard to say for sure,
but it certainly sounds like a routing problem....
