Message-ID: <19FC.66E5%dave@mi-web.com> Hi there. When I telnet into our MaxTNT, I can successfully ping to and telnet into any outside valid address, however, when we're dialed into the same TNT, the only things we can ping are other servers in the same class C. With dialup, we can't ping the gateway (it's the telco/co-lo's router), but can ping the other servers in the same Class C. I use the TNT as an example, but actally, it's not unique to the TNT. The same seems to happen with the Max 4000 series, and with an NT/R&RAS unit on the same Class C. The telco/co-lo sees everything working on their end. I've been trying and trying to redial to connect to a RAS that sits on another Class C, but it's 1 out of 7 PRI lines that goes to it. If I can find my way into it, then I'll be able to tell you what I see from the outside (effectively). Anyone ever experience anything like this? Any ideas??? The phones are ringing off the hook. AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! :-) Dave. ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com To get FAQ'd: From dave at mi-web.com Tue Jan 1 00:50:52 2002 From: dave at mi-web.com (Dave Higgins) Date: Tue Jan 18 13:58:37 2005 Subject: [Ascend] (ASCEND) Dialup Blockage/Weirdness? Message-ID: <719546A93D7DD511BA7800D0B7A87DF02FFE88@trinidad.solunet.com> Hi Jeroen, The first thing I would say is that STAC compression must be supported on both sides of the connection. On the clients PC make sure that Enable software compression is enabled and that hardware compression is not. A rule of thumb to follow is to disable software compression when hardware compression is available which typically is over a V.42bis-compliant modem and to enable it when hardware compression is not like over an ISDN connection (which almost all support STAC). Also, Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 do not support STAC. Only PPP, MP, and MP+ links support Link-Compression. For the Lucent/Ascend units, Windows 95/98 equivalent is the MS-Stac which supports Microsoft/Stac compression. Stac-9 is the actual RFC Compression protocol. If a caller does not support MS-Stac then it will negotiate for Stac and if that is not agreed upon, they use no compression relying on the PPP. When I create the proper VoIP profiles and call-route statements, and then dial the specified number, all I get is fast busies. Also, do you still have to reboot a TNT to get it to register with the gatekeeper? In a very old version of firmware in Netopia PN-series routers, Stac was broken. If your affected customers have these routers, Stac will need to be disabled on their accounts while they upgrade their firmware. -- Peter Lalor ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ From simon at igrin.co.nz Thu Jan 3 14:35:00 2002 From: simon at igrin.co.nz (Simon Byrnand) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:01:31 2005 Subject: [Ascend] (ASCEND) Dial connect, then instant disconnect. Hi Chris, You could try enabling remote loging to a **ix box and look at those logs, they're pretty detailed. (In fact they're probably too verbose) On a MAX6000 its under Ethernet -> Mod Config -> Log, enable Syslog, Host is your **ix box, Port should be 514, and set facility to something like Local0 that isn't used already on the box that will be logging. You'll then have to enable remote reception on the syslog daemon (just add -r to the startup command line option in the Linux version) and add some syslog.conf entries to catch local0, save them in a seperate file (I used /var/log/max.log) and prevent them from getting logged into your mail /var/log/messages. (It would probably pay to firewall port 514 to only allow packets from your NAS, so other people cant send your syslog daemon junk) Or if you use radius, you can tail the detail file for the NAS and watch out for Stop records for that user and see what the disconnect cause is. This worked for me on a MAX 4000: - open the screws at left+right side of chassis - lift the front panel, attention to the LEDs! - lift the upper chassis, this might be not very easy - Jumper P3 is opened and must be closed for the reset - attach terminal to serial port, 57600 bps - power on MAX - MAX prompts you with "=>" -> that means it is in NINDY mode - type "DF" for "download file" - MAX says "CK CK CK" for X-modem beeing ready - upload a working MAX software release with your terminal software using x-modem. meanwhile, drink a coffee or go into church and pray that your MAX will come up again after this procedure... - if upload is finished: power off MAX, open jumper P3, power on MAX - pray pray pray - MAX should come up and can be configured via the terminal at the serial port (it has lost ALL its configuration!) I do not believe there is a command console, however, I have heard that there is a MIB OID for this. Unless someone from Lucent kicks down, however, I doubt you'll be able to find it by parsing the full 20+ MB SNMP walk. I've been trying to get this some time now. More than anything, I would like to see what kind of impact a dozen Ascend-Data-Filters have on TNT load when applied to several hundred dial-up users. I have heard this can have performance impacts, but the reports have been scarce at best. -Nick At 11:01 AM 1/7/2002 +0100, Rishi Sumbal wrote: >Hi everyone, > >I know that the question was probably posted before but does anyone know how >to see CPU utilisation on a MAX TNT ? > >Thanks for any help ! > >Rishi Sumbal >Systems and Network Engineer >Easynet France >_______________________________________________ >rte-ascend mailing list >rte-ascend@lists.real-time.com >https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/rte-ascend From hsteppke at eu.uu.net Tue Jan 8 17:34:08 2002 From: hsteppke at eu.uu.net (Holger Steppke) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:01:32 2005 Subject: (ASCEND) RE: [Ascend] MAX TNT and VoIP on an SS7 bypass network In-Reply-To: <4.3.2.7.2.20020103001535.01b2a088@66.81.1.25> Message-ID: Hi, maybe stupid suggestions: Is the box hashed for voip? try "get base" if you need to check. On the TNT, it is possible to password the port, but on the MAX line, you can get to the console view just by hooking up the correct cable to the port. You are using a straight-thru cable aren't you? The pinouts are in the manual, and remember to try all of the speeds that your terminal emulator is capable of. 2) If the console port is bad, consider using NavisConnect to access the unit over ethernet. Just connect it to the network, let NavisConnect sniff for the MAC address, and try and configure it using SNMP. Of course, if you don't have the full access password or the SNMP password, you will need to Nindy the unit first [Disclaimer: If I had a dollar for every MAX/Pipeline that failed to come back to life after a nindy, well, I'd have more than a few dollars. My personal favorites are 7.0.22 for 4000's and 7.2.3 for 6000's. I've been successfully running both of these for a couple of years, I think. The 8.x versions seems to be pretty flawed. The 9.x versions have supposedly fixed some problems with disabling modems and high pitch tones that exists in 8.x, but I do not have any experience with 9.x yet. I believe that 7.0.x is the highest version that is available for the 4000 series. Given that you are trying to upgrade from something older than 4.6Ci18, there are probably enough dependencies and field changes that you should just reconfigure the unit. If your slot card mix allows it, you should just fclear/nvram the unit and load 7.0.26 (the last production release). > This version 5 applied fine however after reset the > max still reported version 4.6Ci18. Are you using MS-CHAP as your authentication method on the MAX 4000? It is my understanding that there are two versions of MS-CHAP, and upgrading to NT4.0 SP6 may have changed the native version on your NT RADIUS to the newer version, which the MAX 4000 does not support. > I would like to change the Radius over to a 2000 box > but cannot find where to change this and do not know > if it would support 2000 handling authentication. ?> Also, what is the process. Any help would be > appreciated. Thank you. You need to change the RADIUS server the MAX is pointing at, which can be done by changing the IP address at Ethernet>Mod Config>Auth>Auth Host, and you need to make sure that you have the correct shared secret. However, be warned that 2000 IAS and the MAX may have issues as to what constitutes a VSA, and what doesn't. You might want to get a copy of the TAOS Radius Guide and Reference if you need an explanation of more depth. Message-ID: <002301c19ec6$64f0cb20$304f4dd8@bigeye> I have 2 maxes running 7.0.3. When I have more than one ip pool set up (Ethernet->Mod Config->Wan Options), the max will not go to the second or third ip pool once the first one's ip's are all in use. I just connects, doesn't assign an ip address, and hangs up. Due to a limited ip space and bad initial planning, I have these pool set up on one of the maxen: start - 1.2.3.96 count - 31 start - 1.2.3.21 count - 9 start - 1.2.3.40 count - 6 It only offers ip addresses out whichever poll is listed first. I am using 0-126 ip addresses for basically all of my ISP stuff (router, servers, maxen), so there all on the same segment. I have switched configurations between the two maxen, and the problem follows the configuration. My radius users file simply has: DEFAULT Password = "UNIX" User-Service = Framed-User, Framed-Protocol = PPP, Ascend-Idle-Limit = 900 I have searched everywhere and have not found one instance of this happening elsewhere. Anyone have a suggestion on this? (besides renumbering all my devices and servers?) Thanks, Tom Coltharp PS - occasionally, for some reason, under some configurations, the second poll gets used. Once I try to add the third pool, it reverts to the first pool. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unfortunately, it is connected to ISDN interfaces on an Alcatel PBX and not directly to the telco. All 12 channels are combined in a hunt group by the PBX. For months now I have observed that although channels are unused only the first 2 are available for dial-out. Dial-out happens for users with a (Pipeline) call-back setup. Dial-out is attempted but terminates with "c=185 p=2". Sometimes the telnet interface message log shows "No channels available" which of course is not true. As a remedy I have the router reboot every night. Today I observed the following: several channels show up with "X" in the 10-100 link status window (telnet IF). From reboot to reboot different channels are affected. But as soon as I go to "Line config" and disable/enable the line it comes up OK and dial-out works! OK, I could be happy now that I found a workaround. My request for help to you Users is: 1. Has anybody else had these problems, especially in a PBX/EuroISDN setting? What helps? 2. Can anybody give me direct instructions how to cycle the lines via snmpput (OIDs for 9.0.4)? 3. How do I reset the box via snmpput? Actually spoke to them yesterday about it using 1-800-Go-WEBTV Now called MSNTV There are no real settings to adjust on the webtv box.. only other thing that usually causes the problem is the modem in the webtv box. If they don't work with our setup which is pretty standard, we know that box pretty much has problems elsewhere too. Ask them [MSNTV] about any FAQ on their website. You will probably hear a pause before they say they have NO WEBSITE :-) That pretty much speaks for itself WEBTV >> NO WEBSITE >> We don't spend a lot of time supporting THEIR BOX since they don't. But that is a whole different thread for another day. ------- R. Hall NET-LINK Corp. Message-ID: <20020122171430.26824.qmail@web11001.mail.yahoo.com> Tom, I think the problem stems from the fact that you haven't told the Max that it should use multiple pools. When I looked up multiple pools in the RADIUS manual, it seemed that if the Max did not have any instructions on which pool to use, it would default to the first pool (or if it was given instructions to use a pool without addresses or one that was unconfigured it would also default to the first pool). Try adding a pool attribute to your user profile(probably Ascend-IP-Pools=0) and setting it to zero, which should get the Max to refer to it's configuration for any available IP pool. Does anybody have any experience with this? I've generally been running TNTs on 7.2.3 and Max20s on 8.0.3 due to problems with OSPF on the 7 branch. They've also told him that running a Max20 on a different software version from the TNT it is bachauled to will cause problems. That doesn't make much sense to me, aren't they basically two different operating systems? Trying to do damage control and any advice would be appreciated. TEL: 234-1-774-7231 FAX: 234-1-759-6668 ALTERNATIVE EMAIL; akeembabalola@yahoo.com BUSINESS PROPOSAL: TRANSFER OF US$ 41.5 M (FORTY-ONE MILLION FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND U.S DOLLARS) First, I must solicit your trust and strictest confidence in this transaction, this is by nature of the top secret information I am about to devulge to you. You were introduced to us by my mutual aquaintance from the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, Foreign Trade Division, who does not know of the nature of what I am about to introduce to you. He only knows that I have some funds to invest abroad, hence he recommended you. I am the Director of Engineering & Project of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (N.N.P.C) in Lagos, Nigeria. I am seeking your assistance to enable me transfer the sum of US$41,500,000.00 into your private company account for mutual benefits. This money came about as a result of a contract for the supply of two thousand, three hundred and sixty-seven computer unit, installation and the Y2K compliance turn-around maintenance executed on behalf of my Ministry (N.N.P.C), in the year 1999. This contract was officially assigned to be awarded and executed by two foreign contractors at the tune of US$105,500,000.00, but in the course of my negotiation, I bargained with only one foreign contractor, a Bulgarian firm which now executed the contract at the cost of US$64.000.000.00. Thus leaving the remaining US$41.5M floating in the escrow account of the Central Bank of Nigeria (C.B.N) to the benefits of we the three members of the contract award panel unknown to the contractor and any other person in my Ministry. This contract has been satisfactorily executed and inspected as the Bulgarian firm is presently securing his payment from my Ministry. It is however to this effect that I seek your maximum assistance and approval to present your company name alongside with the Bulgarian contractor as the second foreign contractor to enable me transfer the difference (US$41.5M) into your account for further investment depending on your advice. On actualization of the transaction, the funds will be shared thus: 1. 30% of the money would go to you for acting as the beneficiary of the funds. 2. 10% for reimbursement to both parties for incidental expenses that may be incurred in the course of the transaction for insurance, phone bills, documentation etc. 3. 60% to we three members of the Contract Award Panel. All logistics are in place and all modalities worked out for the smooth actualization of the transaction within fourteen working days of commencement after receipt of the following information by fax: Your company's Name, Address, Phone/Fax number and activities not forgetting also to include a contact email address. Also, if we opt for electronic transfer only other than payment by solar bank draft or cash call program, then your bank account particulars. The above information will enable me make the application and lodge claims to the concerned Ministries in favor of your company or name and it is pertinent to state here that this deal is entirely based on trust and the fear of God. If you are able to handle this, then feel free to reach me by my fax on 234-1-759-6668 or on phone number 234-1774-7231. Also furnish me with your own phone, fax numbers and also your email address, as I will be sending you immediately I receive your positive response some classified documents. When I use a browser to bring up the router connection to the internet it always fails the first time. Though the connection has been brought up the browser doesn't 'see' it. If I watch the lights on the Ascend 75 I can stop the browser when the Ascend successfully makes the connection and retry the saem URL and then it works fine. If I just leave it to its own devices the browser will time out with an error message. Again, just hitting return to retry the same URL will work OK. Message-ID: <3C567107.8DF5FE3D@mpimf-heidelberg.mpg.de> Hi Chris, a search on the MS Knowledgebase (http://support.microsoft.com) found this: Article Q174614 IE may timeout if DNS caching is turned off. Windows can resolve host names by various means: querying a DNS, looking up the LMHOSTS file, looking up the HOSTS file (in this order). When a WAN link is down the DNS may not be reached in time. If you turn on DNS caching resolved names will be held in memory till the next reboot. To activate the caching, paste this into a plain text file (named DNSon.reg) and execute it REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] "DnsCacheEnabled"=dword:00000001 or edit the registry yourself. In the article they offer a download of a file named timeout.exe which is a self-extracting archive. It contains the above text file for instant use. Let us know if it helped. I have succeeded in getting the box configured for TCP/IP with little problems and have some test users dialing in. The only thing that I am missing at this point is IPX configuration. All of the IPX options seem to be disabled. I am using the software with the "full" feature set for ISDN PRI/T1 and not a TCP/IP only software. My question is this : Is there another license that I need to purchase to enable IPX features, or am I just missing a little flag to turn it on? Thank you in advance for any advice. Call Filter Description: Specifies the number of a filter used to determine if a packet should cause the idle timer to be reset or a call to be placed. If both a call filter and data filter are applied to a VT100 Interface Parameters Call Mode connection, the MAX applies a call filter after applying a data filter. (Only those packets that the data filter forwards can reach the call filter.) Usage: Specify a number from 0 to 199. The number you enter depends on whether you are applying a filter you created through the VT100 interface, or a firewall you created with SecureConnect Manager (SCM). If you are applying a filter created through the VT100 interface, enter the last 2 digits of the filter number as it appears in the Filters menu. If you are applying a firewall created through SCM, add 100 to the last 2 digits of the firewall number as it appears in the Firewalls menu. For example, if the number of your firewall is 90-601, specify 101. (For information about downloading firewalls to the MAX, see your SCM documentation.) The numbering scheme for filters and firewalls is: * 0 (the default) indicates that no filtering is being used. * 1-99 indicates that a filter created through the VT100 interface is being used. * 100-199 indicates that a filter created with SCM is being used. Is ISDN a requirement for your operation? The hash for ISDN signaling costs about $1500-$2000 for every chassis that you need it for. Usually PRI's are more expensive than T1's so you have to weigh out the cost/requirement issues yourself. David Pascarella, CCNA MCSE LSCP A+ Network Support Engineer SOLUServe TAC 1571 Robert J.
