Not sure on the TAOS side but on thing you could do is switch to a back RADIUS server that had a user file like: DEFAULT Auth-Type = Assert [reply stuff here] You may need to check the Auth-Type based on your RADIUS server but with NavisRadius 3.x or 4.x that would auth every user and takes less then 1 min to configure on the RADIUS server. Now when the box was switched on it had no code for the E1/T1 module and according to our local vendor since the card was shipped separately and placed afterwards, the TAOS does not recognize the card unless and until the TAOS is reloaded on to the Flash. I state this because I do not understand the logic behind this issue or as presented by my vendor. A box that is supposed to work for the mere dial-up users through E1/T1s does not pick up or recognize the card if the card was placed afterwards?? Didnt Lucent knew this fact while loading the TAOS in TNT that the E1/T1 card will be loaded afterwards.. or is being shipped separately?? This simply does not make sense to us. One more thing the Docs on the Lucent documentation CD say for software version 9.0 where as the TAOS loaded is 10.0? Please advice. I have found this list to be the slowest list of some 10 or so that I subscribe to, resulting in sometimes difficult discussions on this list. Even the headers of the letter from your posting shows that bungi.com held it for nearly 10 minutes before sending it to my mail server, which has very good connectivity and availablity. Often it takes 30 minutes or an hour to see my own postings to this list, which always leave my mail server with a few seconds of sending. I have not, however, seen any messages being sent after extremely long periods, such as a month delay. The message you quoted is in the archives for last month, in the correct sequence. Here's the headers from it. You sent it 16:55:39, it hit my gateway at 13:55:24, and went for distribution at 13:55:26. If you didn't get it until today, your mailer is broken, your software is broken, someone on your system restored some backups, or some other glitch happened on your network... As far as I'm >concerned, they are just another subscriber. Ah..... Now we're onto the real problem. I checked back through my folder to my initial subscription and I used the page: https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/rte-ascend So it looks like they are definately offering downstream subscriptions to the list. The interesting thing is that their pages are misleading in the sense that there is no indication that they are not the authorative version of the list, and that they are only doing downstream subscriptions. I had no reason to suspect this at the time I subscribed. Ok, hands up everyone reading this who is actually going via real-time.com's downstream subscription ? We have several TNTs that we see the same type of problem on. Every once in a while, typically several times per day, hdlc2ec cards will hang. We discovered this the following way: telnet to tnt log in open 1 x -- open a hdlc2ec card hdlc -p -- start displaying statistics of hdlc controllers The hdlc -p command typically prints out one line every second or so. We notice that the card hangs since suddenly it stops printing hdlc statistics every second. When this happens, the "open" connection to that particular card is dead/non-responsive. After 10-20-30-40 seconds, the card will come back up, in that the connection once again responds to commands and users connected through the card will have packets flowing to and from them again. While the card is hung, no ip/ppp traffic is forwarded to the users connected on that card at all (we see this by pinging a user on the card while this happens), but when the card comes back up everything works again (except typically some users have hung up because they do not expect 10-40 seconds of total packet loss during their dial-up session). Our TNTs are running 9.0.9, and as far as I can see this problem also exists in 9.0.4. We have no idea when this problem started happening, as we haven't found anything indicating what is happening in the logs, we just noticed that users sometimes experienced packet loss, and l2tp sessions timing out because of it. The most notable features we use are: * radius w/"call-check", auth and acct * stac * hdlc + modems * l2tp * multichassis mpp Anyone ever seen this, possible solutions? I am posting to the list because our local Lucent branch is being pretty much non-responsive to the problems we are having. They are simply not interested. Does Lucent care about its TNT customers who have invested heavily in these boxes? I'm starting to wonder, so this is a cry for help. Our customers certainly can't accept 30-second dead connections now and then, so unless we can get this TNT problem fixed, we are probably going to have to use the TNTs as doorstops and heaters, and go with Ciscos. It's just a pity that we actually believed in Ascend's promises back then when we had to choose between Cisco and Ascend for dialup equipment. -- Oystein Homelien, CVO | oystein@powertech.no PowerTech Information Systems AS | http://www.powertech.no/ Nedre Slottsgate 5, N-0157 OSLO | tel: +47-23-010-010, fax: +47-2220-0333 ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ From b.weeber at viastore.de Mon Nov 18 02:37:24 2002 From: b.weeber at viastore.de (Burkhard Weeber) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:04:27 2005 Subject: [Ascend] RE: (ASCEND) Nindy problem solved In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <003401c28edd$b86a3540$d2edcfd9@viastore.de> Use 7.2.4. That's interesting. I've never seen your exact situation but I've sure seen some modules do strange things...even caused by the shelf-controller (especially under heavy load doing multishelf) Have you done the old swap slot/card/chassis thing? When you say hang, do see the hdlc2ec bouncing? (down, reset, load, boot, post). How about your fatal-history log or syslog info? It's hard to believe that there is NOTHING in these logs after what you have described happens. Does it happen only when you are in the card (open n n )? Again, debugging on a heavily loaded multishelf set doing tunneling may have made the SCM burp on you, etc. Of course, if this happens even when the slot is closed and no debugging is on, that'd be a null issue. Are you running 9.0.9 for a specific reason or can you downgrade to 9.0.6? It's nice when you ask a bunch of questions and get even more back, eh? I suggest the 9.0.6 since you said that 9.0.9 was what you're using and 9.0.4 didn't do it for you either. Sometimes, a bug fix addressing some issues can cause a cascade of other issues to either resolve or appear. 9.0.6 , IMHO, is a stable code and is patched for the SNMP vulnerability. So, that is the one that made sense to me. If that doesn't work and you still want to approach the TAOS issue, you can always try 9.1.5. I believe Lucent will give that to you free if you can prove you need it for a possible bug fix. It might give you some in-roads to them helping you figure out the problem if they have to give you something free if they don't help you. ;-) Just out of curiosity, do you have more than 1 multishelf setup? Also, Lucent will likely tell you that they do not support multishelf anymore (in fact, 9.1.x might not even support it! - better double check on that). They may even tell you that your issues are the reason, in part, that multishelf is "no longer supported". Who knows? It's worth a try. - David -----Original Message----- From: ?ystein Homelien [mailto:oystein@homelien.no] Sent: Monday, November 18, 2002 4:05 PM To: DPascarella@solunet.com Cc: ascend-users@bungi.com Subject: RE: [Ascend] (ASCEND) ascend tnt hdlc2ec cards _hanging_ temporar ily On Mon, 18 Nov 2002 DPascarella@solunet.com wrote: > Have you done the old swap slot/card/chassis thing? We are running 9.0.9 because we always have various small issues that we would like to fix (bad connects, tnts need to be rebooted every week or they start refusing more and more isdn calls per hour, etc.). So we try to keep running the newest bugfixes if there is an indication that something we need to fix has been fixed in the release notes. Is there anything specific about 9.0.6 that would make it a good release to test? As I said, we have also tested with 9.0.4 (that we ran previously, without having this problem) but the problem still persists. I am not sure when the problem started appearing, since as you see uptime and logs show nothing about the problem. I've got a very strange issue with a group of users. Let me first start with what I had. 2 MaxTNT's with 96 port modem cards and 2 8 port T1 cards. We received all of our PRI's from the local telco. We then purchased our own telco switch to handle our PRI's and stop paying the local telco. So now we get trunks from the LEC, which I then turn into PRI's to service our TNT's. At the same time I switched from using the 8 port T1 cards to using a channelized DS3 card. My problem is with the new set up, 99% of my customers work just fine. However, it would appear that almost all of my Mac clients can't connect, they get a 185/30 for the disconnect/progress code. According to Ascend 185/30 = The TAOS unit received the user's modem call and allocated a modem to answer the call. Before completing modem negotiation, the TAOS unit could not detect any signal from the user's computer modem, probably because the modems had marginal line quality. Because the TAOS unit's modem has a digital connection to its local CO, the poor line quality occurred between the user's modem and its local CO. The problem might also have been caused by an incompatibility between the modems. These customers can connect at speeds slower than ~40k, but never connect at higher. The weird part is that a Windows laptop works just fine at 49k on their phone line. To add to the weirdness, I now have one ISDN customer (using a windows PC) that can connect at 56K, but not at 64K. They get the exact same 185/30 as the Mac people. So I don't see how it can be phone line related since the ISDN user has digital lines, and we have digital PRI's. Please help me before I loose all my hair and have a flat spot on my head from banging it on the wall. Thanks. -- David A. Max 6096, TAOS 9.0, CHT1, D4 AMI, Clocking = Yes Modem rings in attempts hardware handshake and then drops connection. After 1 or 2 calls the line busies out. Initial tone is what I would expect then handshake attempts with either retrain or dull low tone and drops connection. I don't believe this is the High Pitched Tone, Max 6000 and CHT1 problem but thought I would ask again what helps that problem. The CHT1 is going through some testing as we speak which is where I think the problem is but looking for some other options as well. Thanks. ------- R. I don't know if you can set up a port redirect in the TNT, but I do know that you can set up filters to block port 80 traffic to anything except your proxies (which is a good idea in general). The only drawback to this, is that your users will need to manually set their proxy server address. I would recommend either setting your proxy server between the TNT and border router, or do the redirect on the border router itself (there's a sample configuration in the Squid FAQ and/or manual (which would apply even if you're not using squid). > > TIA > > Regards, > ----------- > Faisal ?. Can I load 6000 code on a 4000 box and enable those 2 extra T1 ports? Add some more modems and thus save me the cost of purchasing another chassis? If they are the newer 24 port cards, then you only have room for 96 users. Once you reach this limit, your users will have nowhere to go. I assume that you have 4 E1 lines, which provides you with over 96 actual incoming lines. I would suggest that you make sure you have enough DSPs to cover all your incoming lines. My name is Ado Adamu and I am a 17 years old girl, I was a computer science student of the City Computer Technology, Lagos, Nigeria before I recently lost both parents to a ghastly motor accident, My dad is a Nigerian and my mum was from Ghana, I was born in Nigeria, but after the death of my parents, I started staying with my dad sister, that was when my problems started, my Aunty is not all that too educated, I can say she does not know the value of education, she has been trying to persuade me into prostitution, 3 of her daughters are prostituting in Europe, but I told her that I want to continue my studies, she frowned at all my plead to get money from her to resume school. I have not been able to pay for my school fees, and that has been my major problem since all this while, the cost of my school fees is N21,500 which is equilvanlent to $185, I have been begging her but to no avail, but she is still bent on persuading me to go into prostitution, I have been seeking for assistance here in Nigeria, but most people that I can reach are very poor, good education is what I need now and I just have to be begging to have it, my late parents always told me that if I dedicate my time and become well educated that I will become great, but I can now see it as something that I might never achieve, please give me your advise, I want to realise the dream that my parents had for me, the only resort now for me is to beg and please don't l > ook down on me for that reason, it is circumstance that lead me to this. please let me just ask this favor from you, I pray you willing be to help me, but it is never my intention to ask you for assistance to pay my school fees, but it is the time limit that I have to pay for my tuition that is bothering me, if I am able to raise the money for my school fees then I will go and resume school and also I want to leave my Aunty, I want to be staying the school dormitory and avoid my Aunty, please just take me as your daughter, if I had known any of my mums relative, they would have been the ones to help me out, considering the fact that I am not in any position to ask you for assistance, I will be most grateful if you can consider me as your daughter and help me in paying my tuition, if I am able to pay for my fees the school promised to give me free accomodation in the dormitory, please just do this for me, let that which you want to give to me be your own way of eradicating prostitution, I will be expecting your mail to know how you can help me. My regards to your family and may the good Lord continue to bless you, Amen. > Sincerely Yours > Ado Adamu > I sent an Angel to watch over you while you were asleep but the Angel came back earlier than I expected, and I asked the Angel why, and he said, Angels don't watch over Angels. > May you be an Angel to someone in need, Amen. > From justina49 at netscape.net Sat Nov 23 13:09:22 2002 From: justina49 at netscape.net (MRS.JUSTINA KABILA) Date: Tue Jan 18 14:04:30 2005 Subject: [Ascend] URGENT ASSISTANCE Message-ID: <200211231909.gANJ98q04157@enchanter.real-time.com> STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL FROM: MRS. Is there a specific command to > check this or > do i need to enable some debug? > The best way to do this, is via radius and/or syslog accounting. I've set my radius server to record all accounting data to a SQL server, from which, I can quickly generate reports on connect speeds, disconnect causes, connection failures, etc... In order to see failed connection attempts, you'll need to set external-auth/rad-acct-client/acct-stop-only = yes. > 2ndly what type of message do i need to enable for syslog messages to > display E1 link down messages on my syslog server. Log/syslog-level = critical If you have an SNMP server, you can enable trap messages, which should be more efficient than scanning syslog for such issues. > > And finally i need to define policy routing on the TNT box to > redirect all > port 80 traffic to my proxy server forcefully, how to go about it? I don't know if you can set up a port redirect in the TNT, but I do know that you can set up filters to block port 80 traffic to anything except your proxies (which is a good idea in general). The only drawback to this, is that your users will need to manually set their proxy server address. I would recommend either setting your proxy server between the TNT and border router, or do the redirect on the border router itself (there's a sample configuration in the Squid FAQ and/or manual (which would apply even if you're not using squid). > > TIA > > Regards, > ----------- > Faisal ?. Thanks. -- David A. I would use a telnet client which can capture to file, go into diagnostics mode and do a "wannext 1500". Feed that file to "ethereal" and you will get a quite good understanding what happens. For a quick analysis of the snipplet you gave I would say that the giving away of the IP address fails or is late since the host is still "0.0.0.0". I'm still confused why it works on my old number, but not my new number. The hardware is the same, the TAOS version is the same. People seem to negotiate the same connect speed as before, and can't connect, but if they force the modem to connect at a lower speed (like 33.6) they connect just fine to the new number. A lot of the customers are people with iMac's that have very cheap on-board modems based on these chipsets. Maybe just a normal fix for these modems might solve my problems. Any advice on them would be helpful. Thanks. -- David A. I'm still confused why it works on my old number, but not my new number. The hardware is the same, the TAOS version is the same. People seem to negotiate the same connect speed as before, and can't connect, but if they force the modem to connect at a lower speed (like 33.6) they connect just fine to the new number. I do not have one set for ip-interface {{0 0 0}} but I do have the same IP address set on ip-interface {{1 16 1}0} (which is my ethernet connection for the TNT). I'm not sure that I understand, the TNT won't let me set the same IP address on {{0 0 0}}. Are you saying to use something like 209.251.129.60 for {{0 0 0}}? I'm willing to try anything once, just want to make sure I'm trying the right thing. I should mention that I'm running TAOS v9.0.3 and the working TNT does not have an IP set in the {{0 0 0}} interface either and it doesn't seem to have a problem with the same users that can't use my other TNT's. I'm hoping to upgrade to TAOS v9.0.9 tomorrow. -- David A. I presume you are aware when a group of rebel soldiers led by Sir. Foday Sankoh overthrew the Government of Sierra Leone forcing the President out of power and killing a number of ministers including some politicians. After this political crisis, My Father went into exile for safety due to pursuance from the present government under the leadership of Alhaji Tijan Kabbah who sees my father as an opposition to his corrupt government. My father while in exile died, may his soul rest in peace? Before his death, he has in his possession a treasure containing a huge sum of US$15M (Fifteen Million, United States Dollars). Which he entrusted to me as his next of kin. However, when it became apparently obvious that the country was no longer safe for citizens due to political crises: massive killing and destruction of properties, I deposited the funds with a discrete Courier/Security company for further shipment and safe-keeping to Europe while I flee to Nigeria as a political refugee. The Courier/Security Company based on my recommendation on that note can only release the funds to you. Meanwhile, I am soliciting for a reliable and trust worthy person who will serve as the guardian/investor of this fund, with whom I could plan the best way to invest funds into a profitable business. And this is why I decide to contact you with all hope that you will help me achieve this dream. To show my appreciation for your assistance in actualising this business with me, I shall give you 25% of the total money and 5% for miscellaneous expense while the remaining 70% belong to me, which I intend to re-invest into any profitable Business in your country. Please, I need your entire support and co-operation for the success of the business venture, your utmost confidentially, sincerity and secrecy is highly required, due to my family's present predicament. Details of how I intend to carry out this project will be discussed as soon as I get a response of your willingness and interest. I sincerely will appreciate your urgent acknowledgment as soon as possible by contacting me on my Telephone number: +234 8037 210 251 or E-mail address. Thank you. I have a used Ascend Max 4000 that I bought used from a friend's ex-boss who runs an ISP. It came with (3) MX-SL-16MOD-S56 modules. When I received it, it booted fine, and I was able to serial console into it with no problems. I put it into the rack w/ all of the other routers and plugged the ISDN connection into it and began configuring it, then got called away to another project. It stayed there powered up for about a month, when I came back to it. It now will not boot if any of the 16MOD modules are plugged in. If I remove them, it boots fine. The documentation is somewhat lacking for troubleshooting this device. I'm a Cisco CCNA and usually can figure most anything out, but I can't get a handle on this one. Any ideas? I don't expect anyone to see this today (what the hell am I doing working?) so here's a question for tomorrow. Don't all Max's support the MX-SL-16MOD-S56 modem cards. I picked up a Max MXHP-4T1 to use as a backup in case I had 1 or 2 lines go out. I have some of the 56k cards to put in it, thought it would be easy, but the unit doesn't recognize a 56k card. Tried a google search but couldn't find anything. This unit has software version 7.0.4 loaded on it. Was this unit pre-56k modems so it doesn't support this or is there something I have to do to make this work? On a related item, I have another Max MXHP-4T1-4 that does recognize these cards. However, the first Net/T1 10-000 shows Not Avail. The second one 20-000 seems to be active. I've reloaded this unit using Nindy and am running software version 7.0.4. Is there some way to enable the first T1? Or, does that mean that I should just use WAN 3 and WAN 4 if I want to use this as a backup. Thanks. Then, to enable stacking, just make sure the key and port are set the same on each max. To minimize problems, I do recommend running OSPF (which will allow a static IP to work on any Max, and for a dynamic IP to temporarily shift to another box if the first half of the link goes down). -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks http://www.psknet.com 540.994.4254 - 866.477.5638 > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-ascend-users@max.bungi.com > [mailto:owner-ascend-users@max.bungi.com] On Behalf Of John Kern > Sent: Friday, November 29, 2002 10:11 AM > To: ascend-users@max.bungi.com > Subject: (ASCEND) Ascend Stacking > > > > Anyone stacking maxes? > > I think this is what it is called. > > I want a dual channel ISDN customer to be able to hit 2 > different maxes and not have a problem with the connection. > > I have never done this before and need to know how to configure it. > > I am running max 6000's and 1 4000. > > I have ver 9.0.6 on the 6k's and 6.1.7 on the 4k. > > HELP ASAP PLEASE! > > Thanks, > John > > ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ > To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to > ascend-users-request@bungi.com > Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/ > > ++ Ascend Users Mailing List ++ To unsubscribe: send unsubscribe to ascend-users-request@bungi.com Archives: http://www.nexial.com/mailinglists/
