Yeah, I personally love the thought of a file overwriting my /etc/passwd with
something else without my knowledge. 

None of the packaging systems prevent you from building from source. Noone say
you can't set  your make install path to /usr/local/my_source_installs_path or
whatever. The key difference is, if I am building something from source, and
make fails I can look at that and go "Hmm...o.k. $apt-get install
<missing-header-file>" rerun make and I am golden.
