I've experienced problems with XFree86 4, wherein if I have gpm running 
in console land, and then I start X up, the X  server and gpm 'fight' 
over the pointer, causing serious craziness (pointer jumps to an 
edge/corner and starts throwing up context menus randomly).  Killing gpm 
fixes that right up.
