Thanks for the hint.  Turns out I just had to point /usr/lib/libGL.so at
GL/libGL.so.1.2.xf86_glx and then set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib, for some
reason it's not in ld.so.conf and it's not being found by quake.  Now if I
could only get it full screen.  It takes my whole screen, but only uses the
bottom left corner and it's only like 25fps.
