It's really just simple problem solving. Start basic and work your way up.
i.e. if your network interface appears to stop working, first check that
the driver is loaded, if so check to make sure you have lights both on the
switch then on the nic, then try replacing the cable with a known good
cable, try diff ports, try diff nics etc etc etc.
