CDROM's, and DVD's for that matter, are not ideal or even useful for sequential data searching. tar, cpio, and dump are tools designed for tape -- sequential -- devices. A much better idea is to build select tarballs and burn them collectively to a single CD. Building a table of contents (tar -t) is much quicker that way than having to span multiple CD's, scanning every sector.
