I've used mod_gzip with 1.3 and mod_deflate with 2.0, and they work well.
At least if you have cpu to spare. The effectiveness really matters on
how much of your content is compressable. I see anywhere from 25-75% 
compression on webpages (for browsers that understand gzip compression).
