I agree, it sounds like access rights, and specifically 
on the XP box.

Log in as "local administrator" on the XP 
box (username is "administrator" and domain is 
the xp machine name, not the domain it logs into)
and try to change the access rights on the 
particular share once again. If that doesn't work, 
I imagine there is a security setting somewhere 
the is "helping" you by ignoring your attempts to 
configure the share "writable". :-/

That REALLY sounds an awful lot like access rights (issues).
