I'm looking for recommendations on a vhdl compiler and simulator under linux. I
found FreeHDL, but I'd be willing to pay for one of the other environments if
there is a commerical alternative for linux that is "best".

My twist is that I'd like to simulate the hardware in software and write an
application to that simulated-hardware.

I've got vhdl code that compiles to a target piece of hardware. I'd like to use
that same vhdl code and create a library(?) and header files(?) or some sort of
simulated hardware thingie that I could code to so I don't have to be on the
real hardware.
