I'm not sure about your ifconfig problem, but it could be that your PATH 
environment variable got stomped on by some program.  When you logged 
out/in, your PATH was reloaded from /etc/profile or whatever.

And to answer you question about graphical login, look in the file 
/etc/inittab.  There should be a line in there that looks like:

id:3:initdefault:

change it to:

id:5:initdefault:

And reboot.
