This might be relevant. Another route might be to check dmesg for messages regarding the device. I.e.: # fdisk /dev/sdb and use 'p' to print the partition table (assuming it works, anyway). Use 'q' to quit. I seem to recall that Zip disks would vary in the partition used depending on what filesystem it was. VFAT was 4, as I recall. Kind of strange, but you never know when history will repeat itself.
