I'll 2nd the slackware recommendation.  It was my first distro and I
learned alot.  Still use it for it's stability and hack-ability.  It's
quick to install, easy to update, and most things work out of the box
with slackware 9.0 (YMMV depending on what hardware you have).  It just
works.
