I run Debian on my Thinkpad but suspect the configuration would be
similar. I use the mouse both in console mode and under X11. Here are
the relevant configs:
# /etc/gpm.conf
device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
repeat_type=msc # <== "MouseSystems"
type=fups2 # <== "broken ps/2"
append=""
sample_rate=
-------------------------------
# snippet of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
Option "Protocol" "MouseSystems"
EndSection
/dev/mouse is a symlink to /dev/gpmdata
