Make sure ohci or uhci usb drivers are loaded, and
ehci if you want high speed.  Also make sure usb-storage
driver module is loaded. Do that with a lsmod command,
Do a modprobe usb-storage if it isn't loaded.

Try a lsusb command, if drivers are loaded this will list out usb
devices.
