Depending on what you "need". Speed, DPI, Duplexing, etc...

Hp has some under $200 laser printers that will work for years.

I have an HP LJ 4+, I got it used and cheep. It's less expensive to run then an
Ink Jet and easy to maintain. It's an 8ppm printer that does 600 DPI with power
saving features. I have it connected to an HP Jet Direct not a computer.
For documents and basic monochrome graphics it's great.

Three guidelines for buying printers.
1. Easy to maintain
If you have to remove the fuser to put in a toner cartridge it's not easy
If the paper is jamming all the time it's not easy
2. Cost effective
If you have to buy 2-3 items (toner, optical drum, or fuser) when the toner
runs out it's not so cost effective. Does it use suck power.
3. Easy to use
Does the paper go in easy, what's the jam history of the product,
Does it have a complicated menu system.

Consumables for HP printers should be HP. I know they are expensive but you will
have less leakage and fewer spills. You will also get longer life from the
consumables from HP then from refilled after market products.
