That worked. I was able to create an empty file using touch.

It wasn't as it turned out. I added the postgres user to the postgres group:

postgres:x:32:postgres

I got the same errors after making the changes you suggested:

pg_dump: [custom archiver] could not open archive file
/var/backups/postgres/mtdb.out: Permission denied

Interesingly, there is a zero-length file in /var/backups/postgres created
by the backup script:

-rw-r--r--    1 root     postgres        0 Jan 27 15:16 mtdb.out

Any other suggestions?
