The thing you have to avoid is vendor lock-in.  If you enjoy your 
expensive proprietary equipment, but if its price doesn't come down (or 
increases) while the competitors' prices drop, will you be able to easily 
move away from the expensive machin to the inexpensive machine?  Or will 
you be stuck for years with the high prices?
