Excel and Outlook being Microsquish products work very well together for the copy and paste thing. What you can do in Excel is save the file as a Coma Separated Values (CVS) file. In Thunderbird you can import the CVS file in to the address book. If I remember right it should put them where you want them to be. Once the email addresses are in a Thunderbird address book folder you can use "Shift" and/or "CTRL" to select the addresses When the addresses are selected right click and select "Write" it will open a new message with the addresses in the "To:" field.
