Knoppix lets you boot into a usable Linux environment from a CD or DVD, meaning you don't have to install it on your hard drive on overwrite whatever is on there. If you're going to download a big ISO, I'd suggest downloading and installing Fedora Core 9 instead as it'll most likely support your hardware out of the box.
