FYI.. The best solution seems to be the PrinterShare app. This Android
app has drivers for several thousand printers and includes most brands.
This and includes the HP 4050 B&W and 4650 color laserjets I have. So far,
this finds my networked printers with no fuss, and lets me select either and
its advanced options. Not sure I'll need the extra features of their $4.95
"premium version".

Interesting idea. I have several Pi's sitting idle.

Precisely the best solution. $40 gets you a Pi3 with a case and an SD card.

Just put a raspberry pi running CUPS in front of it. That gives you a
fairly easy way to support Google cloud printing, iOS printing, etc on your
old bulletproof tank. That's how my LaserJet 4+ is set up. :)

My point is only that it ain't broke, and I have no need to replace it.
Have a setup success that indicates it will work if called another model.
Mine, on standby, only draws a few watts, like a night light, wakes quickly
on a print request, prints, and goes back to sleep in standby mode.
Not an energy hog for me, since I don't print often.

And. you're point is? It's tech that existed 5 years before smartphones were
even an idea.

They are great 600dpi printers. I love them. They're energy hogs but not
nearly as much as the LJIII I support at work. We have three of those.
