Feels like we're so close, but still no joy with amt vnc console.  After
the first 4 of these wsman commands
<http://cyberciti.biz/faq/remotely-access-intel-amt-kvm-linux-desktop>,
attempting to connect with vncviewer got "unable connect to socket: No
route to host (113)".  After the 5th wsman command, attempting to connect
with vncviewer gets "read: Connection reset by peer (104)".  Any good
advice?  Will i need mesh

stepping up from openvz to kvm and gluster.

openvz was configured to store everything as just files, not ploops, so
backuppc was entirely sufficient, tho, on-site only.

gluster provides offsite capability, but iiuc won't help resurrect old
versions.

snapshotting can keep old versions, tho offhand i doubt it holds up as a
practical approach to keeping backups.  but maybe?  virsh snapshots might
be significantly superior to lvm snapshots?  i'm all ears regarding your
experience.

what do folks recommend, that's libre, and makes it reasonable to recover
back versions of files from any of a number of kvm guests?

i can see setting up each guest to work with backuppc, but now is the time
to consider alternatives, if there are alternatives worthy of considering.

I haven't used live USBs much so this may be an
easy question to answer.  I've been running Linux Mint
from a USB stick.  It works fine, but each time I use it
I have to get some packages (git, C++ compiler, etc.)
again.  I get the packages with apt-get install ...
Is there a way to get the packages to last from one boot
to the next?  Tia

Brian,

The inherit nature of a LIVE system on a thing (usually a DVD/CD) is that it’s RO media.

You should check your /etc/fstab file to make sure it’s not loading RAM disk (or virtual disks) up for the R/W file systems and, if it is, consider installing the OS to a USB flash media instead of a LIVE USB — which is designed for testing/fixing things on a living system and not be your daily driver…
