I'm sadly not in the market for Infiniband gear (as tempting as those 
64-bit EUIs are!), but I've just gotta commend you for being the only 
one putting yourself out there on TCLUG-list. :'(

You folks used to have some pretty good activity back in the day, too.
Sadly, all the regional LUGs are petering out. At one point, there were a
half dozen or so lists in Iowa/Minnesota now there are only a couple active.

I am from the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area down in Iowa, so it's a bit of a
drive for me. I joined all the local user groups about 20 years ago and
never left.

That said, I am a RH admin by trade -- I lead the decision making process
for my team when it comes to RH, manage a satellite server, and all the
pieces those two things entail.

I'll keep an eye out for a chance to go to one of the meetings, as it would
make a good excuse to visit some friends in the area.

That's great news professionals are keeping the Linux push going. It 
makes a lot of sense to pick Red Hat. I get an Opensource.com" 
newsletter I usually read and pick out what I have a clue about to learn 
more. Unfortunately, I don't have a clue what most of your "related 
topics" are.

My recent big Linux adventure is "LinuxCNC." The software made huge 
strides forward with ease of use and documentation since I first failed 
to learn it. I'm certain I'll fail again, but oh what fun to admire what 
it might do.

requires PHP version 4.3.x. Is there a version of Ubuntu or some other
distro that can support that PHP version and has an active repository

I wouldn’t run a version of any release that isn’t supported anymore… so you’re best bet is to do what I did with 5.x for years and get the repos added to a modern release. 

4.3 was released 20 years ago so your best bet is to find an OS from 20 years ago and see if the repos are available to crawl.

When I did PHP4 back then I had to hand-compile it on FreeBSD 5… 

YMMV.

That sounds like a tall order. I hope you're getting paid well for it!

My first thought was to approach this by using asdf-vm
(https://asdf-vm.com/) and the php plugin to install the old
version, just for this purpose.

    asdf plugin-add php
    asdf install php 4.3.11

That proved to be a challenge, since 4.3.11 isn't compiling easily on my
newer version of Debian - even after installing autoconf2.13. Rather
than continuing to research why (something to do with failing to find
"zend.h"), I did a quick search for a Docker container image... Guess
what? There's one that's about 7 years old.

You can use that image in your own Dockerfile to customize its bindings
and start your application. Is 4.4.0 close enough? If not, track down
the original Dockerfile and build it yourself, perhaps?

moodlehq has a bunch of docker images as well, so perhaps once you
leapfrog up to a more modern version, you'll be able to move forward
more quickly.

There is an active repository for a lot of old linux at;

If you browse the repository you can find pages like this for the 
"opensuse" era;

http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/

Or this for the "suse" era;

There are also Red Hat, etc, etc directories.

So basically, yes there are some very good old repositories around.

Thank you for the responses. I found a list of old Ubuntu distros and
have made good progress moving between distros as required specs
change with each version of Moodle. I have managed to upgrade from
version 1.8.4 to 3.1.0 so far.
