This might be a really nifty way to convince townhome and apartment
powers-that-be that your no worse than the DBS user next door. I might be
able to convince the townhome board that this is ok for me to put up on
the roof. They dont have to, but I would love to see it someday.
Note: I am not advocating saying that this is a MMDS or DBS dish while
modified and in use. That is most likely illegal and not a cool thing to
do.
Anyone in coon rapids north-westish (perhaps east, dono) of egret and hwy
10 want to try this out sometime and make a link? I would be happy to
share redundant network access in kind for the moment until an overlay
network is formed.

It would not be illegal to use the DBS dish as long as you reduce the
transmit power level as requied by the FCC.
The amount you have to reduce the power is directly dependent on the
actual gain of the antenna system.

Also, when Chris speaks of the antenna system, he does include the loss of
the coax in the overall gain figures.
System gain (DB) = Antenna gain (DB) + coax loss (-DB)
You can find the published loss figures on www.timesmicrowave.com for the
LMR-xxx series and www.belden.com for 9913 and 89913.
Chris, would you like to give a power output (watts and dbm) computation
example?

Last year Tim Pozar expanded his write up on how FCC rules affect
802.11, the result is here:

Section 3 discusses power limits in a very straightforward way.
It's a zero-sum game for point-to-multipoint, but not so for point-to-point
links.

For these climates, you can also invert the entire dish, so that the
feed is on the top, and the tin can doesn't fill up with snow/water/
bird-droppings.
These rusty-can solutions are not going to fare very well in our
climate. They're fun, but expect to be doing replacements/
modifications at regular (and possibly inconvenient) intervals.

Wrong. Take a closer look at the rules Andy just emailed out.
Section 4 -- Equipment Limitations and Certifications:
15.203 - An intentional radiator shall be designed to ensure no antenna
other then that furnished by the responsible party shall be used with the
device.
...and...
15.204c: Only the antenna with which an intentional radiator is authorized
may be used with the intentional radiator.
So it _is_ illegal to do what we are discussing here. But everything we
discuss on this list is purely academic until someone builds it, right? :)
