(They were taking testimonials and comments from any member of the public who wanted to speak their concerns about media issues in 2 min or less.) Commissioner Adelstein was there along with Commissioner Copp's advisor Goldstein. Here is more info on what the event was about: http://www.wirelessiq.info/content/newsfeed/2180.html http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-254939A1.pdf I didn't know about the event until less than 2 hours before it started, otherwise I would have spread news of its happening. Nonetheless, the 315-seat hall was filled and an overflow room was setup. Public statements began about 9:15p and went overtime to 12:55p...3 hours and 40 minutes and at two minutes apiece thats up to 110 public statements (the event was originally scheduled to end at 11:00p). There was a little overhead in calling up the names of those who wanted to make a statement so they could get in line, so realistically I bet 100 people made statements. The Commisioner and Copp's advisor remained until the everyone who wanted to make a statement had done so. KFAI radio was there and recorded all the audio, and the SPNN cable channel recorded all the video. The KFAI recording person said he'd try to get all the audio onto the KFAI website sometime in the next few weeks. Freepress.net helped organize it and one of their people said that TPT will be putting together an episode about the meeting that will likely air in late Jan or early Feb 2005. http://freepress.net/ http://freepress.net/future/=stpaul The Hubbards from Hubbard broadcasting (Channel 5 in the TC area) were present and stayed until the end of the event. All of the ~100 public comments were unanimous in being against further consolidation of the media companies and many wanted some of these company mergers reversed. There were numerous comments voicing disapproval of the takeover of St. Olaf's WCAL station by MPR, with the commenters asking the FCC to reverse its approval of the broadcast license takeover. All in all it was a very good event. I hope that we see more of these kind of meetings between officials and the concerned populace in the future, provided that actual results are gained. It doesn't do the public any good for these events to only be feel-good in nature. As some commenter said, 'we need to put the teeth back in the FCC to serve the public interest'. -hk At 11:35 AM 12/10/2004 -0600, you wrote: >Thought this would be of interest to TCWUG-ers. I'm pretty sure two 18" yagis will give you more than enough signal to get through that glass. If the antennas are anything like the ones here http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2415y.php (14.5db from an 18" yagi), you'll have up to 29db gain from both antennas. That's enough signal to punch thru most any normal wall or window (a concrete wall eats between 10-15db of signal, see http://www.airespace.com/products/appnote_wlan_planning_design.php ). Your distance is 100' line-of-sight except for the glass (or wall, as you may find the signal penetrates the wall easier than the glass) which should be easily traversed with any wireless gear. I'd say go for it...I think you've got a better than 90% chance it'll work; you may even be able to get by with the stock antennas some APs come with (e.g. the Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GS units work very good). The only thing I can think of that could screw up your plan is too much interference from other 2.4ghz devices like cordless phones, cordless door cameras, and other wireless networks. -Haudy Kazemi _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From bgilbertson at ieee.org Fri Dec 17 13:46:33 2004 From: bgilbertson at ieee.org (bgilbertson@ieee.org) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:45 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] 802.11b through tempered glass In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <41C33799.6060204@ieee.org> Probably referring to "low-e" glass where a metal or metal oxide film is deposited to reflect infrared and reduce air conditioning costs. You may want to take a look at http://isp-planet.com/fixed_wireless/technology/2001/tint_bol.html They note that coated glass in addition to some tinted gs can also stop signals. "Most, if not all, of this glazing is tin oxide (SnO2) coated. It's a brick wall to RF". One additional note, try and dissuade the tip & ring guy from putting the yagis right up to the window. Saving a few extra feet is probably not going to help in any significant way, and if the windows are metalised then this will most likely just mess with the radiation pattern of the yagi, effectively lowering their gain. Setting them back from the windows at least 4-6' and making sure they are not right up against other metal such as ductwork, ceiling grid, window frame etc will help. -- andyw@pobox.com Andy Warner Voice: (612) 801-8549 Fax: (208) 575-5634 _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From mail at RobWentworth.com Fri Dec 17 21:53:04 2004 From: mail at RobWentworth.com (Rob Wentworth) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:45 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] FYI - Win XP slowdown fix Message-ID: <002801c4e4b5$13cdbb80$6700a8c0@server> If anybody on the list has problems with a Win XP system that has become painfully slow despite virus and spyware removal, the following tips may help: The key is that Win XP is much too aggressive in "permanently" forcing your hard disk IDE controller into PIO mode, where the CPU is 100% busy reading and writing individual bytes of data from the hard disks, rather than letting the DMA (Direct Memory Access) hardware move the data while the CPU attends to other tasks. Apply both sets of registry changes. The first one fixes the current problem. The second one reduces reoccurance of the problem. Regarding the step about first applying a hotfix, you can forget it if you do the change listed at the first URL below. You can't download the referenced hotfix anyway... :-( ----------------------------------------------------- solving the dma problem in winxp!!: http://club.cdfreaks.com/lite/t-60218.html you go to the reg. key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001 or 0002 (depending on beeing primary[0001] or secondary[0002] ide channel) there you modify the DWORD value of : if the drive is on master: "MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed" or if the drive is on slave: "SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed" to ffffffff then go back to your device manager set your drive in IDE channel properties first back to pio and then, after confirming, again to dma ...that should do the trick ----------------------------------------------------- IDE ATA and ATAPI disks use PIO mode after multiple time-out or CRC errors occur: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B817472 SYMPTOMS After you suspending and resume your computer several times, hard disk performance may be reduced. If you use Device Manager to view the properties of the IDE channel towhich the drive is connected, the Advanced Settings tab may show that the current transfer mode for the drive is "PIO Mode." CAUSE After the Windows IDE/ATAPI Port driver (Atapi.sys) receives a cumulative total of six time-out or cyclical redundancy check (CRC) errors, the driver reduces the communications speed (the transfer mode) from the highest Direct Memory Access (DMA) mode to lower DMA modes in steps. If the driver continues to receive time-out or CRC errors, the driver eventually reduces the transfer mode to the slowest mode (PIO mode). ------ In Windows 2000 only, read requests to ATA disks are sometimes issued with a time-out value of 4 seconds. This occurs when your computer resumes from standby. This might cause a disk time-out because drives typically take more than 4 seconds to spin up. This time-out value was changed to 10 seconds. In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, this time-out value is always 10 seconds. An alternate, less-aggressive policy is implemented to reduce the transfer mode (from faster to slower DMA modes, and then eventually to PIO mode) on time-out and CRC errors. The existing behavior is that the IDE/ATAPI Port driver (Atapi.sys) reduces the transfer mode after any 6 cumulative time-out or CRC errors. When the new policy is implemented by this fix, Atapi.sys reduces the transfer mode only after 6 consecutive time-out or CRC errors. This new policy is implemented only if the registry value that is described later in this article is present. To implement the alternate behavior (reducing the transfer mode after six consecutive time-out or CRC errors instead of after six cumulative time-out or CRC errors), you must modify the registry as described below after you apply the hotfix. Can anyone give me any ideas using off the self products. The biggest problem is that I am not there year round to administer it, so I am trying to sty away for a wireless access point on each floor. I am trying to keep it simple so if the goes down (routers need rebooting) I can walk someone through it over the phone. I was thinking of using a powerline adapter http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=2 01539&pcount=&Product_Id=152632 Coming off the main router and then have an adaptor in each condo but I do not think that will work because each condo has its own meter and own circuit. My second idea is using a booster http://www.hawkingtech.com/prodList.php?FamID=72 off the main router and may be off all other access points. I think I might be able to cut down to 3 access points that way. Any ideas anyone can give me will be appreciated. Or, find a building around here and try it out. I would be completely interested to see how it works in concrete and rebar with additional interference. The office building I work in (6 floors, but more like 2 or 3 times the size is my guess) takes over 25 802.11b 100mW AP's to just barely cover -- mostly because its concrete and rebar. Ugh. You'll find with concrete/rebar floors that you'll most likely need an AP on each floor. Alternatively, if wireless is impossible, you could use a Cisco LRE solution if you can convince the local phone company that putting LRE injectors on their network where they demarc into the building is ok. Cisco has gone through the pain of certifying them in some markets, so this might be easier than it sounds. (but, my guess is the phone company would tell you to go away!) The hardware is more expensive, but the benefit would be that its dead simple. If the phone service is in house, this would be even easier to implement. Downside, its more like ~$355/user to implement for the hardware. (2950 LRE switches 1x24 and 1x8, CPE equipment, and POTS splitter) $20-30 less if you had your own CAT3 to run over, but if you ended up pulling your own cable, might as well go CAT5 and run ethernet. On the upside, that would be 6 megabit connections (or faster) to each user rather than a shared wireless medium. The 2950 isn't a router, so you'd need to hook something up to it, too. Many complexes like those typically have one demarc point (MDF if you will) and branch to the other buildings (IDF) with lots of extra unused telephone pairs and Cat5. So put one T1 into the Demarc and then router, switch, In-house DSL, or 1 or 2 pair wire based media converters to deliver to the two offices. The other option is to extend the T1 demarc to your 1st office then crossconnect a telco wire pair to the second office through the common area demarc terminating the two ends with long haul wire based media converters from BlackBox, Transistions, etc. All the while exceeding the T1 speeds. This will cost you less than good quality WiFi and still be more secure. You have to put the router and switches in for both cases. The only additional hardware cost is the long haul converter and time to tone out an unused pair. Time on the Fl. Beach, priceless. :-) S. If they were, this would certainly be my preference. And in our environment, wireless is anything but a "simple" solution. _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From adam at askewview.net Mon Dec 20 14:59:57 2004 From: adam at askewview.net (Adam) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:47 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] FYI - Win XP slowdown fix In-Reply-To: <3.0.5.32.20041219233739.02318410@kaze0010.email.umn.edu> References: <3.0.5.32.20041219233739.02318410@kaze0010.email.umn.edu> Message-ID: <41C73D4D.7090604@askewview.net> I had a Dell Dimension that I had gotten off of ebay that had the drive go out. Message-ID: Hi, We're looking to buy a couple handheld devices to do indoor and outdoor site surveys with. We'd prefer to avoid Windows-based devices, and are looking for inexpensive solutions as we may be buying several more. Units that can also do security audits would be a plus, although not required. GPS would be great. Many of the units seem to be very expensive, and some make you buy the Windows handheld separately. Is there anything out there that's good and based on, say, the Zaurus? So what's your preference? Thanks. I would just get an ipaq, a pcmcia backpack, handheld.org's familiar, kismet, a GPS (one that does bluetooth, perhaps, even), a wireless card (like the d-link prism2 high-power card, because it has a detachable antenna and fairly good sensitivity), and post-process the logs after your done. I've worked with all of the above sans GPS, and it does a pretty good job. Kismet pumps out logs in tons of great formats, and you should be able to get a good set of coordinates for each AP if you make enough samples. Kismet can also log *everything* into pcap, so you can crack wep keys later (do it during the day when people are using the wlan, too, tho). -- Scott Dier KC0OBS http://www.ringworld.org/ -- http://www.railworks.org/ -- http://publictransportation.org/ -- Stop "playing political splat ball," support the Northstar Train! _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list
