Dave,

The easiest way to see what kind of bandwidth you're getting/using, is to
install MRTG and monitor your router's T1 port, ethernet port, or the
ethernet port on your switch.

This can be tricky, depending on what type of router it is. You can read
about MRTG at http://www.mrtg.org.

A bandwidth test won't really show you much useful information. I run
those, and I get 30-80KB/s over an unloaded T1. I download a 200MB file
from 3 hops away, and I average 140KB/s. A single connection will never max
out a T1, you need to poll your router to see what you're actually using.

They told me to think out of the box, but I
tripped over it, now I own my own company.

**
**
** Hi there.
**
** All indicators so far point to a lack of true T1 bandwidth from our
** provider, but I'd like to run a couple more tests before I offer them
** "proof". We've been getting barraged with customer calls that
** moving around
** the 'net has been horrible the last few weeks. I'm wondering if
** any of you
** fine folks could help me out.
**
** What I need is a couple/few URLs to files that are known to be
** served up on
** a good running hi-speed line, and some download speeds that you
** get on your
** good running hi-speed line (T1 or cable or whatever) when you
** transfer them.
** I'd like to make some comparisons to what I'm getting on ours.
** These could
** be either HTTP or allowed anonymous FTP.
**
** What I'm looking for are files around the 1 to 2 Meg size so that the
** average download rate should be settled down by the time it
** reaches the end
** of them. And preferably from a site that just hums right along.
**
** I've run a few tests so far, but I have no real way of knowing
** that any of
** them are being served up at peak speed.
**
** I appreciate any help offered.
**
** Dave.
