I wanted to back up Windows servers to a Linux box using either
BackupPC or Bacula. Bacula has a Windows client but cannot fix the
locked file issues with Windows. BackupPC doesn't have a network
protocol and would have to use samba.

My plan was to use ntbackup to create local files of either the entire
system or just the system state and backing up that file across the
network. Since either system can work with the ntbackup file, I
thought BackupPC looked better because it takes advantage of the rsync
network savings. Although I've had issues relying on Windows samba in
the past. Also, depending on the type of compression and composition
of the backup file rsync may or may not help with network traffic.

Anyone else had a chance to test this out or shed any light?
